The Institute was originally founded as the Department of Bioinformatics of the University Medical Center (UMG) which was officially started in November 15, 2002 when E. Wingender accepted a chair at the Georg-August-University Göttingen. The initial team physically moved to Göttingen in January 2003.

The department is engaged in several research projects and provides analysis services for the UMG. Our teaching activities is targeting on a wide range of students from different fields such as in medicine, biology, biochemistry, molocular medicine, applied statistics, computer sciences and data science.

In 2018 Prof.Dr. Edgar Wingender was given emertitus state and Prof.Dr. Tim Beissbarth became the new head of the institute. To underline the even closer work with the UMG the institute was renamed to "Department of Medical Bioinformatics".
